When you think back to your summers as a child what are one of the top memories that come to mind? I think a memory we probably all have in common is running through the sprinkler in your own front yard. We had the kind that was rectangular shaped, and sprayed the water front to back, to front, and back again. Of course, our parents were trying to water the lawn and save it from becoming horribly dried out. To children across America, it was the ultimate at-home summer cool down and water play fun.
Naturally I want my kids to have to same fond, care-free memories. Our base housing area has a neighborhood sprinkler system, so there’s no need for me to water my lawn and therefore don’t have one of those nifty, back and forth sprinklers. What I did have, though, was an old garden hose. With my canny ability to come up with kooky DIY ideas, and my husbands handyman expertise, we made a tree sprinkler.
Actually, it was quite easy. One end of the hose was cut off, the other end still able to connect to the water spigot on the house. In the open end my husband used a plastic plug he had laying on his work bench and a couple of heavy duty zip ties. (oddly enough we have a bucket of zip ties) A nail and a hammer were the only other tools we needed. Hubs hammered the nail through along the length of the hose until he reached the end
***don’t worry about making too many holes. If you don’t have enough and there is too much water pressure in the hose you’re going to blast the plug right out of the end.
When you’re all done, wrap the hose up the trunk of the tree and around the branches. You can do this as tight or as loose as you like, there’s really no right or wrong way.
Hook your hose up to the spigot, and SLOWLY turn the water on. You don’t want there to be too much pressure too quickly.
Watch as the water shoots out from every angle of tree; it looks almost enchanting. I warn you though! Be prepared to hear the sweetest giggles, sillies squeals, and the deepest belly laughs.
Your kids are going to LOVE running around their very own Tree Sprinkler.
