DETACH from…… REPORT to….
Receiving new official orders is often an emotionally tumultuous time. Those few words letting you now where you’ll be headed next are filled with such excitement, anticipation, and let’s admit it, anxiety! It makes the rumors and verbal promises a reality. And then whether you celebrate or commiserate, before you even have time to really process it all, you start preparing for the move.
I’ve found that my favorite part of the move, the part that gets me through all the boxes and bubble wrap, is planning for our next place.
I browse local blogs of the town we’re moving to. I research schools and local summer camps. I troll through Craigslist and Military-by-Owner for homes where we might live. And then, once we’ve found a place I immediately start planning how we’ll make it a home. With the help a few free internet tools I’ve found I often got all the basics mapped out before we even get the keys. These fabulous interactive room planners have become one of my favorite PCS distractions. Since most apartments and housing communities share their floor plans with future tenants, I upload room dimensions and furniture sizes and start getting all the important spaces mapped out.
Getting ready for a move of your own? Just get online and before you know it you’ll have created a plan. Then when you get into your new home you know exactly where to tell the guys to put your couch, the chair and that giant tv stand you weren’t sure was going to fit. Even if you change your mind once you arrive it’s still a “very good place to start.”
